Laura Drammer: The Queen of the Valley
The morning sun breaks over the rolling hills of the Santa Ynez Valley, casting a golden light across acres of pristine equestrian estates, modern luxury ranches, and neat rows of wine-producing vineyards. For decades, this idyllic landscape in California has served as both a sanctuary for high-profile escapes and a tight-knit community of multi-generational landowners. Navigating both worlds with equal parts grace, grit, and unrivaled expertise is Laura Drammer. A Sports + Entertainment Specialist with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties, Laura has spent over three decades cementing her reputation as an industry powerhouse.

Foundations built on the land
Before she was navigating multi-million-dollar escrows, Laura was immersed in the rustic lifestyle that defines the Central Coast. "I always grew up in the country on acreage, and we had a lot of animals—horses, cows, sheep, chickens, dogs, cats, and so on," Laura recalled. "Because of that, I grew up loving land and homes. This area in the San Ynez Valley offers the same lifestyle that I grew up with."
Real estate, it turned out, was woven directly into her DNA. Her father was an active developer who was already retired when she was born, allowing him to focus entirely on his projects. When her mother went to law school out of the area, a nine-year-old Laura became her father’s constant companion. "I was his sidekick," Laura remarked. “I would drive the golf cart for him on the golf course, sitting with him and his buddies while they talked about investments, finance, and developments. I just absorbed that world for years while tagging along to his project sites. I remember roller skating through these massive, empty buildings before he would divide them up to become a bank, a shop, or a strip mall."
Her immersion into the world of construction and development only deepened as she grew older. She eventually married a contractor whose father was also a major developer in the region, purchasing large 160-acre parcels of land, splitting them into 40-acre plots, and building luxury homes. The turning point came when her father-in-law posed a simple, practical question: "Why are we hiring outside real estate agents? Why don't you get your license so you can earn commission on these houses?"
"And that is how my career in real estate truly started," Laura said. "I got excited about development, building, and remodeling. It inspired me to want to be a part of the buying and selling process beyond just being on the sidelines of it, and helping people get to experience the excitement, pleasure, and benefits of being homeowners."

Joining a global network
After finishing college and obtaining her real estate credentials at 21, Laura began climbing the ranks of the industry from the ground up. Her career began in a tiny, independent office under a broker who employed only two other agents. Over the next several years, Laura moved strategically through various regions and independent firms—including stints in Murphys, California, Carpinteria, and Montecito—sharpening her tools at every stop.
Eventually, she transitioned back to the Santa Ynez Valley, working with a series of local boutique companies focused heavily on ranch and farm properties. Her final independent stop was with a premier local brand known for handling everything "from mobile homes to mansions." When a large corporate brokerage purchased that firm, Laura stayed on for eight years, setting the stage for her eventual alignment with a global powerhouse.
Laura's team
Laura eventually joined Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties, which was a deliberate choice centered on matching her personal ethos with a brand that commanded respect at every tier of the market. "I wanted to align myself with a company that truly focused on exceptional client service and offered powerful marketing and networking opportunities across every single price point," Laura noted. "It just felt like the right fit for me because of its incredible reputation for professionalism, integrity, and global reach." The company had long held a sterling reputation in nearby Montecito, but the network’s transition to the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices banner elevated California Properties’ presence to an entirely new level.
Today, the benefits of that global network assist Laura in bridging the gap between local charm and international demand. The corporate backing provides her listings with extensive marketing resources and worldwide exposure, while the brokerage’s networking infrastructure has also proven invaluable throughout her career. "The biggest benefits come from the conventions and networking events," Laura explained. "Attending these events allows me to connect with other Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices agents from different regions of California and across the country." Those relationships have helped Laura build a strong referral network spanning multiple states and markets, further expanding the reach of both her business and her listings. "It’s very important to me and it's great knowing that my listings have that kind of reach."

Mastering the high-profile landscape
The Santa Ynez Valley has long been a favorite weekend getaway and residential destination for Hollywood executives, professional athletes, and tech executives looking for a quick two-hour drive from Los Angeles. Over her career, Laura has become the go-to specialist for these high-profile figures, navigating high-stakes deals with absolute discretion and an easygoing professionalism that strips away the intimidation of celebrity status.
"With all of my high-profile clientele, I have found them all so lovely," Laura remarked. "They are all just regular people—they all have families, and they are very appreciative.” Currently, Laura is working with clients whose net worth is in the billions, and the sentiment remains true. “They have been the most polite and cordial, constantly saying, 'Thank you so much for being here,' 'Thank you so much for your time,' and 'We so appreciate this,’” she emphasized. “They’ve just all been really normal. They will give you their cell phone number right away, respond to texts, and make jokes."
Among her notable public transactions was the sale of the famous Jenni Kayne Ranch, home to the lifestyle mogul behind an empire of clothing, housewares, and beauty products. But regardless of whether her client is a household name or a local resident, Laura savors the human connection. "The rewarding part is just feeling that you can bond with people regardless of their fame or status," Laura stated. "No one has pushed me off to a business manager or someone else to deal with. In the beginning, obviously, when you get into negotiations, you deal with managers, but otherwise, they're just very upfront.”

However, working with elite clientele comes with its own unique set of logistical challenges, including having to navigate around demanding schedules. "You must make sure to stay in constant communication and reach out repeatedly, simply because of how busy they are—they might miss things or not be able to respond to you quickly," Laura pointed out. "With these clients, you have to learn to anticipate their needs and try to solve problems quickly for them, because a resolution is all they really want. They don't want to get buried in the weeds; they just want to know what the problem is and what the solution is. Building trust with them has been extremely important."
This emphasis on trust has allowed Laura to build an airtight, referral-based business that functions organically within elite circles. Often, these high-end connections happen completely by chance, sparked by the enthusiastic word-of-mouth of her loyal client base. "A well-known actor from a TV show was wine tasting in Los Olivos, and the owner of the winery happens to be a client and good friend of mine, so he referred me," Laura recalled. "The actor just texted me while he was sitting there drinking a glass of wine, saying, 'Hey, I want to look at a piece of property.' It was just random."
In another instance, an open house in Ballard, California, brought in a high-level executive who serves as the right-hand man for the Los Angeles Chargers. "He didn't have a buyer’s agent, so we represented him in a dual agency situation," Laura explained. "He bought this darling little bungalow that he remodeled and fixed up.” Following the smooth closing of his own home, the executive’s positive experience quickly turned into a major networking win. Because he runs in the same circles as LA’s top sports elite, he didn't hesitate to pass Laura’s name along, actively encouraging his well-connected colleagues to reach out to her for their own real estate needs. “As I've been doing this for so long, the reputation and the referral base are just there. They call me the Queen of the Valley."

The "hands-on" philosophy
Despite managing a staggering inventory—at the time of writing, Laura’s representing 39 active listings —she refuses to hand off the gritty work. Her process stays intensely hands-on from the first walkthrough to the final signature, because she believes the only way to represent these properties well is to understand them intimately. That specialized, deep-rooted knowledge and commitment becomes non-negotiable when dealing with the complex agricultural, equestrian, and vineyard properties of the Santa Ynez Valley. Unlike suburban developments, rural luxury real estate requires an agent to double as an inspector, historian, and dirt-under-the-fingernails coordinator.
"As a veteran at this point, my depth of knowledge is something people really appreciate,” Laura emphasized. This reality has earned her a rather unexpected, humorous moniker among her peers. "I actually get called the 'septic queen' because we deal with a lot of septic repairs and replacements," Laura laughed.
In rural communities like Santa Ynez, there are no city sewer systems; instead, every property comes with its own unique septic system and potential complications, many of which surface at the most inconvenient times. “We joke that it's like a holiday tradition—we can't seem to go a single Christmas without being out in the rain with an exposed septic system,” she said.

The amount of preparation required before a property even hits the market can be extensive. Laura and her team spend significant time gathering information and working closely with sellers to fully understand every aspect of the property. "Beyond just checking the roofs, we are looking at soil tests to check for agricultural viability or vineyard potential," Laura explained.
From water access to equestrian facilities, every detail matters because buyers are often purchasing not just a home, but an entire lifestyle. "We have to understand water wells, their production capacity, and water quality testing. With equestrian facilities, you have to know what they offer and whether they are fully functional." For Laura, success in this niche ultimately comes down to specialization and preparation. "The main challenge is that you have to become highly specialized and know a lot about all of it, not just a little bit."
That level of detail often means navigating issues far beyond a standard real estate transaction, from survey discrepancies to county regulations and infrastructure logistics. "For example, I have one property in escrow right now that has five water wells and ten septic systems. We are currently navigating survey boundaries and getting the county roads department involved because a past survey wasn't recorded properly." In Laura’s world, understanding the property inside and out is essential. "A lot goes into it, so it really comes down to educating yourself in your field. You have to truly know your stuff."

Wisdom for the next generation
Having moved past the early, grueling days of her career, Laura looks at the industry with the seasoned perspective of a true veteran. When asked about the lessons she wishes she had grasped earlier, she instantly points to something she still actively works to perfect. "The lesson I have learned, and continue to learn, is the importance of boundaries and work-life balance," Laura observed. "I have learned how to establish firm boundaries for myself, though I'll admit I still work all the time. I've also learned that patience and consistency matter more than chasing quick success. Building a lasting reputation takes time, and treating people well always matters."
For the new generation of real estate agents currently entering the market—those who find themselves struggling through dry spells and market shifts—Laura offers a grounded piece of advice rooted in her own journey. "I had to get past the chase of the dollar, which is really hard in the beginning of your career when you're eating Top Ramen," Laura recalled. "But I'm proud that I maintained my integrity, always did what I felt was right, and followed through. It comes down to persistent consistency and perseverance; I'm proud of who I still am.”
