JUST SOLD! Mid Century Icon in Okemos, MI

Nick Sudduth goes the Extra Mile(s) to Match a Mid Century Icon by Alden B. Dow, with a Modern Couple

BHHS TLW agent Nick Sudduth will never forget the connection he made with 20th century history, this past week. It culminated in the sale of the Alden B Dow designed home, at 1172 Wrightwind, in Okemos, MI where Nick represented the buyers. Nick knew that his clients had very distinctive taste and were enthusiasts of fine mid-century architecture. Because the buyers had very strong careers: one an illustrator, the other a tech entrepreneur - they were able to live wherever they chose to. As a team, with Nick as their trusted Realtor, they searched far and wide for something that would be perfect for them. And found it in this beautiful estate.

About the architect & the property

Alden B Dow was one of the most renowned architects of the mid 20th century. In 1937, at the International Expo in Paris, he won the Best residential Design in the World. He was also the son of the founder of Dow Chemical, and thus from one of the wealthiest families in the world at the time. But architecture was his passion, and he was prolific at it, designing dozens of commercial, institutional, and residential works all over Michigan, in his 50 year career.

Built in 1967, this was one of the last projects for Dow, and it had a special significance, because it was for his only son, Michael Lloyd Dow. The home has one of the 1st ever indoor "infinity" pools, where a current is generated to swim in place. It has a multi - zoned heating system that more resembles a commercial building than a home, ensuring precise control of the comfort within all parts of the home. There is also a very peculiar wing of the home, that is the equivalent of a safe room, with sturdy doors & hardware and windows well above ground level. The legend is that Dow was concerned for the safety of his son, and wanted a refuge for him if he were ever threatened by kidnapping.
