The story of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Michigan Real Estate and Northern Indiana Real Estate didn't begin in a boardroom; it began in a high school cafeteria. Our founder, Steve Fase, often jokes that his leadership career started when he was asked to help "sling mashed potatoes" in the Northview High School lunchline. That simple act of service—showing up when asked and working with humility—became the blueprint for a real estate legacy that has spanned over 50 years.
In 1973, at just 20 years old, Steve joined his father as a REALTOR®. By a stroke of fate (and a leap of faith), he soon found himself taking over five unfinished houses with no building experience. He relied on the wisdom of "old Dutch subs"—craftsmen who taught him that if you treat people with loyalty, they will build your future alongside you.
The Miracle of Independence
While many real estate firms are driven by outside investors, Steve Fase chose a different path. He remained a "loner" in business, choosing to own 100% of the company to ensure that the culture stayed rooted in family values.
This independence was tested during the 2008 housing crash. While major firms across the country were folding or being absorbed, Steve showed up every day, cut his own salary, and fought for his agents. We didn’t just survive; we grew. Through the landmark acquisition of the Kalamazoo market and a relentless focus on innovation—being the first to bring Wi-Fi to Michigan real estate offices—we emerged stronger than ever.

2013–2023: A Decade of Excellence
In February 2013, we reached a turning point: becoming an independently owned franchise of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. This allowed us to pair our local "family-first" feel with the world’s most respected brand.
In February 2023, we celebrated our 10th Anniversary under the Berkshire Hathaway name. Over that decade, we expanded our reach across Michigan and Northern Indiana, integrating legendary names like Tomie Raines and Executive Realty, and growing to a family of over 900 agents and 50 offices.
The Next Chapter: Steve Fase II and the Future
Real estate is a business of transitions, and ours has been one of evolution. In 2019, as we moved into our new flagship headquarters, the torch began to pass to Steve Fase II.
They say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and Steve II is proof of that. High-energy and people-first, he carries his father’s values in his heart while navigating the complexities of a modern, fast-paced world. Steve II is a dedicated listener and problem solver who recognizes that no great leader stands alone. He has strategically built a mighty team around him to fill in the gaps, allowing his future-forward thinking to lead the way.
As we move from a decade of rapid expansion into a season of redefining our culture and nurturing from within, Steve II’s blend of intellect and willingness to delegate is exactly what the company needs. While the tools of the trade have changed—from driving 50,000 miles a year to connecting via FaceTime and Zoom—the core principle remains: we are a company that nurtures its own.
